On city council I will work to make Arcata the first Zero Waste city in Humboldt County.
Zero waste is not just about recycling, but about waste prevention and reuse. Zero Waste has the potential to spark entrepreneurship and create jobs focused on reducing and reusing waste. Fire and Light and Scrap Humboldt are great examples of the different ways to reuse. There is even a local effort of converting plaza events to Zero Waste with the support of tireless volunteers.
The first step for the city to move towards its Zero Waste future is to create a game plan. I will advocate for the city to move forward on an audit so we can identify short-term and long-term opportunities.
Here are some potential ways we can move towards Zero Waste in Arcata:
- Diverting food waste from restaurants, Humboldt State University, and residents for renewable fuel or composting
- Install "hydration stations" around the city to reduce single-use plastic bottle use
- Provide city support and incentives for public community events to go Zero Waste
What ideas do you have to move Arcata towards Zero Waste?
